Qualities of the “perfect” college hitter.

We asked current college coaches and former college players and here are their answers

Doesn’t swing at balls out of the zone.
Hard to strikeout
Never gives up at bats.
Power to opposite side of the field.

Gage Hutchinson / Florida State University / Former Student-Athlete

Aggressive- Go to bat with focus on every single pitch. Be
aggressive on strikes as well as balls. Learning movement by
watching a ball go back is huge.

Focus- Every pitch matters. Learn to watch pitchers to find
tales that will give you an advantage.

Knowledgeable- Know every situation that you are in. This
includes yourself as well as the situation the pitcher is in during
your at bat.

Dallas Baldwin / Coker University / Former Student-Athlete

A perfect college hitter knows their game and strengths. Each perfect college hitter can be different. If you are fast guy then you need to incorporate small ball. If you are a power guy look for pitches in counts that you can drive. Also, a perfect college hitter is selfless, everyone wants to hit the double to drive in the run but if you go in and do your job as many times as possible then you helped your team win. So, my perfect college hitter knows their strengths and is selfless.

Dawson Posick / Southern Wesleyan University / Former Student-Athlete

Aggressive, patient, fearless, calm, clutch, consistent. Being a good hitter is more than just swinging hard and carelessly; it’s about getting your pitch and consistently doing something with it.

Alan Burnsed / Florida Southern College / Former Student-Athlete

The best college hitters have a different mindset and approach at the plate which makes them stand out. While all college hitters have the ability to hit and most have the ability to hit for power, the stand out hitters have a game plan at the plate are attacking every pitch with a purpose. Having a polished approach and the ability to understand how every count changes the at bat makes hitters much hard to get out and leaves pitchers more vulnerable, as the hitter is able to capitalize on any mistake the pitcher makes.

Jarred Boyer / Iowa Wesleyan University / Former Student-Athlete

Focused every single pitch, in BP and game

Inside and on time of every ball in BP

Hammers the ball to the opposite field

Understands the game situationally and can make adjustments pitch to pitch, within an at bat

Watches the pitcher every pitch to understand his game plan, what pitches he can execute, what his tips are and what pitches he goes to with RISP.

Robert Emery / University of San Francisco / Former Student-Athlete

A spoiler. A hitter that drives an 0-0 painted down and away fastball into the gap.
Hitters that do not miss mistakes. 0-2 count and a SL/CB doesn’t get buried and the
hitter makes you pay for it. Hitters that do the little things. Gets the bunt down, hits the
ball to the other side with runners on 2nd, less than 2 outs. There’s no such thing as a
perfect hitter but a selfless, aggressive hitter is an unenjoyable experience for a
pitcher.

Justin Lawrence / Colorado Rockies / Former Student-Athlete

A perfect college hitter is someone who can make quality contact to all fields.

Tyler Reichenborn / Tennessee Wesleyan University / Former Student-Athlete

The hitter would have good feel for the strike zone and plate discipline. Also would have a an equal balance of power and contact ability to all fields.

Zach Bryant / Jacksonville University / Former Student-Athlete

Hitter that knows the strike zone and doesn’t chase. Has a consistent, repeatable swing with bat speed. Barrel to ball skills. Hitter that has a low percentage of swing and miss. Hitter needs to have some juice, not necessarily power, but some juice to drive the gaps. A complete hitter has a good two strike approach to putting the ball in play, getting jammed is ok with 2 strikes.

Kyle Brooks / University of North Florida / Assistant Coach

Someone who doesn’t let the situation effect their approach.

Someone who can execute more nuanced parts of the game like sacrifice bunting, hit and runs, getting a runner over from 2nd base with less than 2 outs, etc.

Someone with good pitch recognition skills who can cover multiple pitches because in college you can’t be just a fastball hitter.

Ryan Suttenfield / North Central Missouri College / Assistant Coach
  • Good bat to ball skills (does not strike out much)
  • Can drive the ball to all parts of the field
  • Has the ability to take their walks
  • Someone that is a selfless hitter (will do anything to drive a run in given the situation)
  • Someone that will default to competing when they are not feeling their best at the plate (not quit and give up an at bat)
Matt Saliba / Webber International University / Assistant Coach

Body positioning, good hitters make efficient moves to the baseball consistently maximizing ground force output, balance/stability.  Strength, this allows you truly impact the baseball and determines your margin of error +\- . On Time, good hitters consistently on time or elite hand-eye coordination. Competes!! good hitters own the box and make you earn it pitch to pitch / at bat to at bat / game to game. Manipulation of the barrel to drive the baseball to all fields. Some markers that hitters will have but not limited to these listed.

Alonso Wright / Boston Red Sox / Area Scout
